Native Americans living on reservations during the Indian Wars were counted by the Army as often as twice a day – to make sure no one had slipped out to fight. Many individual tribes have these listings and the Library of Congress (www.tom.gov) is making more and more tribal information available on-line.

One of the clearinghouses for genealogical sites is www.cindislist.com. The site references over 200,000 individual sites listed alphabetically by subject. Baker will find the Native American grouping contains information about specific tribes, areas, and linguistic groups.

She will find that until 1832, Cherokees lived in the East – in Georgia and South Carolina. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 mandated the members of the Five Civilized Tribes (including the Cherokee) to the Oklahoma Territory. Some tribal members remained in South Carolina and maintain their own membership rolls.

The Cherokee, like other tribes, had no written records, so researchers must depend on Army and settlers’ records. Traditional names are usually written phonetically, and are seldom the same on any two reports.

The Cherokee Nation passed a new constitution in 1976, which changed how tribal membership was determined. Anyone who can trace direct descent from the Dawes Rolls, a census record from 1902-1907, can be registered as a tribal member.

If her great-Grandmother is not listed on the Dawes Roll, Baker can still find information about her. She will be listed on census rolls with her husband and family, she may have paid taxes on property, and her death must have been recorded by a county.

Tracing Native American genealogy can be a challenge, but it is possible, using the internet.
